|
|
Looking that some of these trucks come into UK with a Turbo timer fitted, I wondering what the pro's & con's, if any, of having these fitted are??
Also if the pro's outweigh the con's, are they easy to install?? |

In mechanical terms it can only be of benefit, they allow the turbo bearings to cool when you switch off...
But they are illegal for road use and i believe they can invalidate your insurance too...
As for fitting you need the right plug to piggyback on to the ignition loom and connect a negative feed to a suitable earth...
I bought one off ebay and didn't know how to fit it (the reason i found and joined this wonderful club) then was told pretty much what i have just said. So i sold it again on ebay...
But saying that i am looking for another one, as i don't really park on public land and i am starting to think the pro's outweigh the cons... |

waste of time on a shogun/paj,japs love there toys, usefull on evo or scooby as there turbos work hard, but on our trucks not really any use, although after a hard run in warm weather it,s good to let the engine tick over for a while to let turbo cool down.also illegal to have engine running without driver present on public highway. |

Because they leave the car running without any keys or attendence...
You can do exactly the same thing by allowing the car to tickover for 30 secs or so before turning off... |

So its not a Turbo timer as such then, more of a engine timer! Correct? |

I work my Paj hard almost everyday
we've got some serious hills round here
when I park up, I leave her ticking over while I retract mirrors, close windows and remove my goodies (satnav, radio face. mobi, etc)
I'm my own turbo-timer |

Yep, only called turbo timer as thats the really the only thing that gets big benefit... Although letting it tick over for a little while is bound to help the cooling system cool the egine a wee bit before switching off... |

But the funny thing is people temd to treat their cars with little respect compared to boats and motorbikes...
For exaple, with the boats most people wouldn't dream of revving the engine(s) hard until they are up to proper temperature... Also these same people will always let the motor tick over for at leat 10 mins while they moor up and wash down...
Also a lot of the people i know will always allow thier bikes to warm up before and cooldown when they finish their ride...
These same people jump in thier cars and drive straight off... |

turbo timers are a waiste of money heres why
when buying 1, u have to get it properly fitted
when you have purchased 1 u then need to purchase a new alarm like a clifford reason being these arnt not compatable with all makes of alrms
insurance reasons, check number 2, your insurance will just say tuff paps your loss not ours
when i had my scobbie i didnt have a turbo timer, i started the engine run it for a few mins, drove it for 10mins then kiked the turbo in....
3 miles from destination never went into turbo, so it starts to cool down b4 i get hom, but i still let it run with me in for a furth 20seconds
so my advice i this, if u get a TT for £200 be prepared to spend a further £300+ on a clifford alarm and another 10k + when your cars stolen:P |

Turbo timer would be a good idea if you spent all day booting your Pajero down a motorway and then pulled over and stopped right away, in reality most of us live in environments where the last parts of our journeys are off boost, i.e. 30mph and slower.
Also in terms of engine protection, I noticed on another thread that the auto-box protects the engine from start up by blocking overdrive until normal engine operating temperature is reached.
Also worth thinking about oil technology which has advanced in leaps and bounds over recent years, my Paj is a '96, I use semi-synthetic oil and change annually 10-12k miles, I base this on the fact that my employer operates 1000+ heavy commercials on semi-synthetic and changes oil annually on vehicles which cover 110k+ miles / annum and regularly achieve 600k during their lifecycle without failure or overhaul. |
