Hi there.
Basically, when the alternator diode pack starts to die, it dumps AC onto the electronics. This causes the oil, alternator and fuel filter light (Sometimes different circuits, it depends on the model) to dimly light up when the engine is at tick over. As you rev the engine, they go out.
The result is that the battery is also getting AC rather than DC and this will shorten its life. You need to change the diode pack in the alternator and to be honest, its worth swapping the whole thing for a reconditioned unit.
I hope this answers your question ? |

If yours is still the original alternator it may be worth considering a rebuilt instead of a replacement unit.
It would seem from posts on here and elsewhere that the quality of aftermarket units tends to vary somewhat.
How quickly do you need it back up and running? I am sure that morex4 gets them reconned and he is at my house later today. I'll ask him when he gets here. If you can get yours over to Baddeley Green then it would save postage one way at least.
pm me your number if you want me to ask James about it.

Good day!
Thanks for sharing this, I do have this symptom and is very seldom and would flash at no given driving pattern nor driving conditions.
Your description is very exact to what I am experiencing now, and to be honest I have taken down my alternator 3 times and I did not find anything physically wrong with it.
On my third strip down of the alternator (about 5 months ago) I made sure everything was fine and when rebuilt and installed the flashing was gone.
5 months later today the flashing came back.
I am assuming that the diode solder joints may be loose, could this be a possible culprit? Maybe because I disassembled everything and when I rebuilt it the solder moved and had a good contact until now. |
