UK based 1992 2.5 Pajero Exceed requires a replacement engine , or my existing one needs to be reconditioned - burning oil (worn piston rings/bore?).

Can someone please advise on whether it is is better/cheaper to pick up an import from Japan, recondition the one I have, or offer other guidance.

Thanks in anciptaion

Lofty

Hi Lofty
over the past few months i've seen 2nd hand engines between £400 _ £1000ish. Seems like a lot of money for something that's an unknown quantity, fair enough if you can get a cast iron garauntee. I am not sure of present prices, but I would of thought that a rebore, plus new pistons, rings plus new shells for the bottom end, would come in a lot cheaper. This would also give you the chance to check out the head, valves etc. If you do it yourself, you know that it's been done right. And don't forget the satifaction you get doing it yourself.
Cheers John. Smile

Hi Lofty,

I blew up the original 2.5 td engine in my Mark 2 on the motorway in April, (quite spectacular - children on board all loved the pyrotechnics and smoke etc!!). It had done 250,000 Km and I guess I was just pushing it too hard.

I shopped around for a replacement recon unit, and the cheapest that I found was £950 plus vat from "Eurojap" on the Trafford Ind Park, Manchester. I know that this is a long way from you, but I am sure that you could arrange transport with them.

They charged me £250 plus vat labour for the exchange of the engines, (and £60 plus vat to come and collect it from my home on a low loader - about 40 miles from them).

I got a 6 month warranty with the recon engine, and have had no problems since, (touch wood).

The phone number is 0161 865 8181. Ask for Abdul. He was very helpful.

Good luck.
