Hi Nige , Its the mechanical pump fitted to my paj 4m40 engine,
Its exactly the same problem as my previous paj.
it will start ,just ,after it has been left standing for a few days, there is loads of white smoke if i try to rev it , no power , runs like a bag of spanners and then it will cut out and takes ages of turning over to start it again and then its fine for the rest of the day stop start driving, If i prime it using the pump on top of the filter it will start ok take a bit to smooth out and then is fine , new filter made no difference and plenty of fuel getting through when its running ,
cheers Dev |

well, the seal from my link on page 2 turned up thursday and it was almost identical to the ebay one i got, so needn't have worried. not actually sure which one of the two the guy fitted but it certainly did the trick and she's running like a dream now.
i'm assuming that i'm right in thinking that i should be able to run her on wvo/svo or bio now without fear of this happening again in the future?
i would imagine that 12yr old rubber seal not being made to withstand acids and the like in bio and more modern diesel was the cause of the damage and that the new one would be made of sterner stuff and won't suffer the same fate as the original seal?
not impressed with having to spend a 1/4 of the value of the car getting a little rubber seal replaced. |

what usually happens is you'll get ignored and then eventually, trying to help, I'll say something like "try chris cars in hull" and then simon will come on and say how i'm not helping and post fuel consumption stats from shropshire to hull in a 2.8 paj and give you a better option closer to home.
he should be along any minute now. |

it was actually as little bit of a p1sstake because that's what normally happens.
costs wise, it can be anything from £150 to £600 depending on where you go, but it does vary wildly from place to place. 'chris cars' in hull are so cheap (around £150 last i heard) because they've become a bit of a specialist in the quick swap job and can usually have your motor back in a couple of hours, but if you get a mechanic unfamiliar with the work required he could take all day (or more) to do it because you have to get right into the guts of the engine to get to the washer that needs replacing. the part itself is literally only a couple of quid, all the money goes on labour costs.
it also seems like just swapping the seal is just a quick fix and a bit of an overhaul is probably the way to go to keep things tip top in the longer term. i'm really surprised nobody has been on before now, maybe they're all still hungover after new years.
simon actually seems to know all the best places so he's probably the best one to tell you somewhere decent relatively near to you. surprised he's not been on already, he's usually pretty quick off the blocks.
in the mean time, if you check through the starting issues bit of the forum there's a lot of info on what you'll want to be doing to get it sorted. |

Hi, it looks like my Paj has got this problem too with the fuel pump! It starts up in the morning and sounds fine, as soon as you start driving it, it runs like a bag of nails coughing, banging and eventually stalling....
If you let it run for a while and let it get hot and keeping throttling it will eventually pass through a run okay, well until the next morning and I find myself pulling away at a junction with no power and stranded in the middle of the road in a fit of rage trying to start her!!
I have taking it to a local garage and they said it could be the fuel pump, which will cost the best part of £800 notes, worst case scenario, so can anyone recommend a local garage that can undertake the work in Wellingborough? (Northants)
Any recommendation would be very helpful. |

I really need to get this sorted 1/2 mile trip today she cut out 8 times today, seems to me it is getting worse.Im getting fed up with playing chicken with traffic at roundabouts and junctions.
I have been in touch with my local garage they would sub out the work to the tune of £450-£700 depending if they need to change the piston in the pump......come on lads can we do better than this or not? |
