My power steering stopped working while I was off roading at the weekend, got the truck home seeing there was no leaks, I looked on here and found a post on how to fix the problem but didn’t have any pics so here’s how to do it with pics (This post is with thanks to sprockett for making the job easy) http://www.pocuk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=360082#360082
1. Remove intercooler remove front battery and plastic tray if fitted with 2 batteries.
I took the opportunity to remove all pipes and reservoir and give them all a good clean
2. Remove the low pressure pipe, you will get quite a lot of oil out of it, so a bowl under the Paj would be a good idea
3. undo the 17mm bolt on the metal pipe and the 17mm nut on top of the high pressure pipe
4. Remove the union from the pump
5. You will see a nut at the bottom of the shaft of the pressure valve, this needs to be undone to get to the plunger and spring.
I cracked this off on the engine but can be done when pump is off the engine in a vice
8. Remove the pump off the engine by undoing the two 12mm bolts at the back of the casing
9. Remove the valve and you will see a small metal pin sticking up, this is the plunger this should be stuck in I.e. valve is stuck open
10. Hold the pump so the plunger is pointing down and gently tap the bottom of the pump with a small hammer, the plunger and spring will pop out.
11. Remove any burrs on the plunger (I used a fine wet & dry sand paper) clean all parts put spring and plunger back into the pump and make sure the plunger pushes in and springs back out freely
12. Put all back together
13. Top up reservoir, start up engine turn the steering full lock one way then the other, check the level in reservoir, that’s it done. |

I can only say for definite on my 3.0V6 petrol, but check the end of the pipe, there should be an o-ring that fits on the very end and seals in the pump body. If this is missing/split/hard then the union won't seal no matter how tight you try and do it up. As I say this is from my experience on my 3.0, but its a reasonable bet that the diesels use a similar fitting.
Hope this helps. |

Quick question, will 1 litre of power steering fluid be enough for a full change over? |
