Ok, before you all say it - it's the wife driving most of the time, not me!

She's only getting 19MPG from the 2.5TD LWB 94' (Using the MPG Calc prog posted here last week)

What can be causing this?  I've "educated" her to keep it under 3000rpm and ease off a bit.

It's an Auto (O/D on) and run in 2WD.

I've had cold start issues - but I think new glow plugs have solved that...

Could it be the pump config / set up or has anyone any other ideas?

I've heard that the pump is 'de-tuned' for the SVA and a retune can sort out this sort of problem - anyone any experience of this?

Thanks
Pete

I routinely get about 27-28 mpg in my 2.5TD, and that's a combination of off-road Very Happy , motorway and town Sad driving.
Is the wife's driving mostly in town? as that can have a serious effect on the mileage. Just recently I did a bit of in town driving (as opposed to cruising up and down the A12) and my Astra 2.0TD went from 42+mpg down to 32mpg. I've even seen it go above 50mpg on a jaunt up to Sunderland to do some work for the new extension to the T&W Metro.
The Air-Con also affects the mileage adversely too, as do the heaters (I notice it's getting cold in the mornings).

She's driving to work each day - approx 10 mile each way & dual carriageway most of the way.

I took it for a long run yesterday up the M3 (140mile round trip) and used half a tank of diesel!

I don't think this is related to driving style as nothing seems to make a difference.

The air con is off - as I've thought of this and turned it off to see if that makes a difference - but it doesn't make much at all (about 1/2 mpg average on a tank)

When mine runs and all the rockers rock together!! I get 25 -28 mpg.

The calc you used from the forum does seem to give a low reading, best bet tank full----tank full how many liters dived my 4.56 = galls
Kms divide by 8 then times 5 gives miles miles into galls hey presto, your drinking the stuff.

positive the O/D is working - that's another problem!

When at 70mph and you acellerate (cue the sticklers...) it drops into 3rd at about 4500rpm and screams the nuts off the engine.

So, yes the O/D is working. I've even counted up to 4!!

I'm getting 450km on a fill up (empty to full tank) on 70 Litres

I'm sure there is a mechanical reason for why this is so poor.

Any mechanics out there want to shed any light...
(or a couple of free barrels of diesel)

THANKS!

Is there any basic work / set up I can do myself on the pump or is it a specialist thing?

Anyone any idea as to how much a pump tune would cost / or can recommend one in the Dorset area (Bournemouth / Christchurch / Poole)

FAO: MICKEY
---------------

Thanks a great deal mate for the advice last night.

I've adjusted the diesel pump & primed the govn'r- you we right - just a 5 minute job.

WOW! What a performance increase - not that I should but, it'll wheel spin from stand still - it never did that before!

Just need to drive it carefully on a full tank and see if there's the MPG performance increase too.

Is there any guideline as to how much the thing can be adjusted - I've adjusted the flat & 1/4 you suggested - but how do I know if too far is too much?

Thanks again.
Anyone else - listen to this guy - he knows his stuff!!

Pete

Peter
My 94 2.8TD lwb Auto only does 19mpg and I have done every thing I can think of, or people have suggested, including having a diesel specialist look at the pump. I can find nothing wrong, and the engine has only done 50,000 miles. People keep telling me they get 24/25 mpg but I would like to know how. If you come up with a solution please let me Know.

To Peter Miller, It might be nice If you could share the info you got from 'Mickey' regarding the obvious performace increase, after all, this is a forum for all Pajero owners & It's good to share information gained using this site with others Smile

according to Paul Jefferson's mpg calculator i'm only getting 12mpg!!!!, so any info on fuel saving will be greatly appreciated
I got 390kms out of a tank full of fuel, assuming a tankfull is 15 gallons, is this correct?

I've just done a run from Ringwood, Hants to Portsmouth - 130km round trip.

Various driving - mainly dual carriageway, motorway and some round town. Kept to under 80 all the way.

Paj goes like a dream and I now seem to have the power needed to overtake.

130km in total
18 litres used (used HGV pump with cut off on pump, before and after journey to get a very similar amount in the tank)
RESULT = 20mpg.

I was getting 19 before. This run was only a short one, but I'll post the findings of a full tank later.

Plus, I'll try and keep it under 3000rpm circa 70mph!

Initial results are looking promising though - increased performance, no degredation in mpg - slightly better if anything.
