Thanks emax! I've had the rear inspection plate off to look at the top of the tank, there was the fuel gauge sender cables and 2 pipes (fuel) coming out of a plate around 4" in diameter, behind that (unaccessible) was a further plate with cables , biut I couldn't really see what that was.
Where would I find the injection pump on the motor (4m40) as I would be looking at it into the engine compartment, left or right?
Cheers.........Sangria, no probs if you are this way |

Thanks big red. I do have a CD Rom with the manuals on and it points to the lower part of the engine (I may be wrong). I will check this out tomorrow so that I can point it out to my chap. I have rang a couple of people today, I am looking in the region of 500.00 euros.....can't believe that when one garage in the UK is quoting around £150.00, may drive back to the UK.
Does anyone know of any reputable mechanics on the Costa del Sol area (not saying the chaps that I spoke to aren't, indeed they are).

...will do the 'front seal' only on the pump for £200 + VAT. They say it is all that is needed and they do hundreds up and down the country. Does that sound ok?
Thanks,
Dan |
Had mine done as per above and it's been great. Cleared up the 'cutting out after a mile or two' problem completely.

Hi Folks,
I have at last managed to find a mecahnic who accepts what we have said about the pump seals being defective (as you may be aware I live in a little village inland of the Costa Del Sol). A few mechanics that I contacted wanted to send the pump away to have it done and then have it recalibrated, is this required? Reading these posts it isn't!!!!
I have 'pulled off' a copy of the fuel pump and its component parts from a CD Rom that I have, so that I can explain to this mechanic.......What and where precisley are these seals.................., any help will make it a lot easier for me to get the message across to the chap.
Cheers |

emax..........top person, thanks for that, this will enable me to explain to el mechanico what needs to do, the pictures help 100%.
What I have found is that if I warm the engine up before pulling away it helps no end. What I do is get the wife to sit in the drivers seat with her foot slighty on the accelerator and I pump the primer on top of the fuel filter if it feels like it is going to stall...............saves the embarrasemnt of the car stopping in some inconvenient spot!!!!! Takes about 10 minutes!
Regards

Ok i'm the proud owner of a 1995 2.8TD SWB Pajero with 81,000 miles and having driven it from where we bought it one day when we came to start it the next morning it started ok and before we could move off the engine slowed and died. It didn't want to restart immediately but did after a few turns. This suggests to me that either we have aan air leak in the fuel line or more likely the fuel pump seals may be on their way out. It started fine this morning and hasn't shown any more symptoms.
I have 2 questions:
1. is my diagnosis typical of failing fuel pump seals?
2. do the seals get progressively worse and over what sort of time - just limited light use?
3. once the fuel pump seals have been replaced how long should they last - or do they fix it long term?
Is there anything else i should watch for?
Great forum and good to be among people who understand cars

Hello PB
Before going down the pump seal trail, check all the fuel pipes and connections, put a new filter in it . Every join and pipe must be perfectly air/fuel tight.
As it started the next day with no problem i am inclined to think that you got some air/blockage in the system.
Dont know if the shorties are the same as LWB but on the latter the fuel lines rust over the rear axle and on top of the tank. While you are checking there you can take out the tank filter and check that as well. The Fuel pipe from the Filter to the injector pump is a favourite one to become loose (and easy to get to )
See you after the mystery

Hi thanks for the thoughts re air in the system - that's my other thread and i'm just gathering information so far. Are there any other tell-tale signs of air in the system? I did a 138 mile trip and recorded 26.3 mpg is that about right - stuck at 60mph as front wheels needed balancing and vibration above that speed not good.

Just started her this morning and again after 30 seconds she began to run slower and roughly and then picked up - my feeling is probably air in the system at the moment so I'm going to check/change the fuel filter and see if the problem goes away. I seem to have read that a piece of clear fuel pipe from the fuel filter to the injection pump inlet is a good way to see if there is air in the system - only temporary. I'll have a look at it and report back.

OK - had the seals done and the bearings and had the pump set up by a specialist and the difference is huge - starts first time evry time and never misses a beat - was a bit pricey at £750 but at least its a job that won't need to be done again in a hurry and it protects the engine integrity. |
