I have a 1994 Pajero 2.8 tdi auto which has covered 100,000Km, it always starts perfectly but within 2-3 minutes it always coughs and splutters to a halt in a cloud of blue grey smoke. It always restarts but only after a lot of hard work by the starter motor. Once it has done this it will run perfectly for thre rest of the day but repeats the same problem when it has fully cooled the next time I use it. Any ideads? Thanks. |

Pump seals for sure, you will need to get someone to renew the seals within the fuel pump, not a cheap job, you will have to find a local diesel specialist in your area, who can do the job.
Well covered in the forums here. |

Go down all avenues before getting the seals done. The above post thought similar, obviously time will tell, but a new fuel filter on mine stopped this problem when I was going to get my pump seals done, not cut out for over a year now. |

I have a 1994 paj, 2.8 turbo recently has started playing me up. First start is fine till I drive 1/2km then will cut out. After several tries and lots of work by starter motor will eventually start in clouds of blue smoke then is normally ok for rest of day ...till following morning..same thing ????. Other than changing fuel filter any ideas anyone ?????
Have seen a couple of similar probs with others..has anyone found out the specific fault and CURED IT ? WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP |

I have exactly this problem on my '94 2.8. I have changed the fuel filter but there was no black in there - it was totally clean. What else can I check before going down the pump seal route?
Many thanks,

Mine was the pump seal. Exactly the same symptoms. It's made so much difference to my car I cant believe it. Even to the point I have reconnected my EGR and it's working fine. Dodgy gearchanges also now working fine.
I think you will have to bite the bullet and get it done. I was going to do mine but in the end I got a mobile mechanic (Mark3 0n here) come down from Essex and done it it around 3 hours.
It may be more difficult where you are to find a mechanic but maybe you could get the pump off and get someone to change the seal. |

My filter wasn't black either. Maybe it's worth checking all your fuel pipes are sound and not leaking in air. Also the clips are keeping them air tight. Also worth checking the pick up pipe in the fuel tank. Pump seal is the last resort really after you've checked other possibilities. |

So what are you saying your problem was? My fuel pipes are pretty poo (perished looking on the end where they join the fuel filter) so maybe that is the problem as the filter isn't black.
All that said, the car just not perform how it used to - which makes me suspicious that it is something more than the fuel pipe.

As I said in the post above the reply to you Dan. My problem did turn out to be the pump seal mate.
However, always worth checking the other possibilities first |

Thanks, Ray.
I'll do some investigation and let you know - my gut instinct is that it's the pump due to the performance degradation over the years.
Cheers again,

Good luck mate. I couldn't get over the difference in performance (and I haven't owned one for that long) since the seal was done.
Much, much better all round |

Ok, if you think it may help, have a look under the rear carpet, inspection plate, remove this, then start at 17 in the picture, check the pipes and the inner filter, see if that helps

that looks very helpful. Thanks for the comments. I will take a look at the tank and filter first and then probably get the pump done if it comes to it. Next thing is finding a reputable place to do it in the Bristol area. I really don't want to be forking out £300+ if I can help it...
Cheers,
