Have used this many times myself, and well worth having the link. My usual method is to use the WebLink Icon in the bar at the top of the post box, (The Globe with the link chain). Right click on the address, and click on copy. Open up your message box, and click on the WebLink Icon. A box appears with a line starting http. Right click on this and then paste the address into the line, click OK, the box changes, now type in a plain language title. Example:

http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=london+eye&countryCode=GB#map=51.50327,-0.11961

or

LONDON EYE MAP

Aha!

But if you look Chris ... your link isn't the same as mine ... mine, for example, is the full, zoomed in map, because it has the complete URL ...

Yours has missed the back half of the URL :

|17|4&loc=GB:51.50327:-0.11961:14|london%20eye|British%20Airways%20London%20Eye%20(London%20Eye)

... so you get a different map - which is the point I'm hoping I've made here dontknow

I did not want to extend the page Simon, which I did at first by putting in the link from the TinyUrl website (the 7 or 8 liner). One as it would normally appear, but it extended the width of the page by about 2 feet, and one using the weblink icon. It does work the same Simon, see the example below.

Chris

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?ovi=1&mqmap.x=300&mqmap.y=75&mapdata=%252bKZmeiIh6N%252bIgpXRP3bylMaN0O4z8OOUkZWYe7NRH6ldDN96YFTIUmSH3Q6OzE5XVqcuc5zb%252fY5wy1MZwTnT2pu%252bNMjOjsHjvNlygTRMzqazPStrN%252f1YzA0oWEWLwkHdhVHeG9sG6cMrfXNJKHY6fML4o6Nb0SeQm75ET9jAjKelrmqBCNta%252bsKC9n8jslz%252fo188N4g3BvAJYuzx8J8r%252f1fPFWkPYg%252bT9Su5KoQ9YpNSj%252bmo0h0aEK%252bofj3f6vCP

ah! i always wondered how that was done!

and yes, i did know that multimap offer a shortened link for forums, but also knew it only gives the generalised map, not the detailed one.

or

TINYURL EXAMPLE

Sure Chris ... but - maybe I didn't make it clear enough ...

Your latest example is a good example of how to shorten a long URL BUT - your example DOESN'T contain any of the characters that cause a problem Rolling Eyes

Let me give an(other) example ... using a pipe | (one of the special characters that causes URL listing poblems) ...

Here's your latest example :

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?ovi=1&mqmap.x=300&mqmap.y=75&mapdata=%252bKZmeiIh6N%252bIgpXRP3bylMaN0O4z8OOUkZWYe7NRH6ldDN96YFTIUmSH3Q6OzE5XVqcuc5zb%252fY5wy1MZwTnT2pu%252bNMjOjsHjvNlygTRMzqazPStrN%252f1YzA0oWEWLwkHdhVHeG9sG6cMrfXNJKHY6fML4o6Nb0SeQm75ET9jAjKelrmqBCNta%252bsKC9n8jslz%252fo188N4g3BvAJYuzx8J8r%252f1fPFWkPYg%252bT9Su5KoQ9YpNSj%252bmo0h0aEK%252bofj3f6vCP

It works!

Put in the 'pipe' :

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp|?ovi=1&mqmap.x=300&mqmap.y=75&mapdata=%252bKZmeiIh6N%252bIgpXRP3bylMaN0O4z8OOUkZWYe7NRH6ldDN96YFTIUmSH3Q6OzE5XVqcuc5zb%252fY5wy1MZwTnT2pu%252bNMjOjsHjvNlygTRMzqazPStrN%252f1YzA0oWEWLwkHdhVHeG9sG6cMrfXNJKHY6fML4o6Nb0SeQm75ET9jAjKelrmqBCNta%252bsKC9n8jslz%252fo188N4g3BvAJYuzx8J8r%252f1fPFWkPYg%252bT9Su5KoQ9YpNSj%252bmo0h0aEK%252bofj3f6vCP

ta-da! It's stopped working!

Now, the 'standard' in forum shortened method (using [url] tags) ...

Code:

[url=http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?ovi=1&mqmap.x=300&mqmap.y=75&mapdata=%252bKZmeiIh6N%252bIgpXRP3bylMaN0O4z8OOUkZWYe7NRH6ldDN96YFTIUmSH3Q6OzE5XVqcuc5zb%252fY5wy1MZwTnT2pu%252bNMjOjsHjvNlygTRMzqazPStrN%252f1YzA0oWEWLwkHdhVHeG9sG6cMrfXNJKHY6fML4o6Nb0SeQm75ET9jAjKelrmqBCNta%252bsKC9n8jslz%252fo188N4g3BvAJYuzx8J8r%252f1fPFWkPYg%252bT9Su5KoQ9YpNSj%252bmo0h0aEK%252bofj3f6vCP]Short Link[/url]

Short Link

That works!

Put in the 'pipe' :

[url=http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp|?ovi=1&mqmap.x=300&mqmap.y=75&mapdata=%252bKZmeiIh6N%252bIgpXRP3bylMaN0O4z8OOUkZWYe7NRH6ldDN96YFTIUmSH3Q6OzE5XVqcuc5zb%252fY5wy1MZwTnT2pu%252bNMjOjsHjvNlygTRMzqazPStrN%252f1YzA0oWEWLwkHdhVHeG9sG6cMrfXNJKHY6fML4o6Nb0SeQm75ET9jAjKelrmqBCNta%252bsKC9n8jslz%252fo188N4g3BvAJYuzx8J8r%252f1fPFWkPYg%252bT9Su5KoQ9YpNSj%252bmo0h0aEK%252bofj3f6vCP]Short Link[/url]

Doh! As you can see ... as I described in the first post in this thread, there are certain (long) URL's that will ONLY resolve properly using something like TinyURL - the rest - sure use the [tags] and have a play Cool

PM me if you're not sure what I mean dontknow

I see where you are coming from Simon. If the link is stacked as in the example on TinyUrl, it will only show the first line highlighted (piped), but by using TinyUrl this is overcome and we get the shorter link. Great. However, in my version, although piped URLs may not work correctly, one can type in the plain language title. Can the shorter URL thru TinyUrl be done the same.
