I am a 20 year old soon to be passing my practical driving test - when I turned 18 I bought a Mitsubishi Pajero Exceed from a car auction and poured everything I had into it. It has bow gotten to the point where the vehicle is almost ready for an MOT, its in incredible condition for a K-reg and I'm looking to get it insured - only problem being that no-one is willing to cover me. I have looked on a few price comparison sites and I can seemingly get a quote for provisional insurance, but there are no quotes available for a fully licenced driver, even if I add a parent as a named driver, it does give me quotes but they are all in the £4000 range and hence completely unaffordable. I also spoke to Footman James as they are supposed to be specialists in this sort of thing but got declined as the 'vehicle is ineligible.' I'm desperate and have no clue what to do so I've come here seeking help - thanks to all that try

Some things you can do that may help (helped me aged 17 having expensive powerful vehicles) but not sure if it helps so much these days:

1. Take the Institute of Advanced Motorists driving test, pass, and join IAM. Proving you are a good defensive driver opens up insurance discounts and access through IAM and specialist brokers.

2. Look for a specialist broker operating on the Lloyds of London market; there are several but it won't guarantee a palatable quote.

3. Check out some of those insurers that require a data-collection device on your vehicle so you can prove you're a careful driver.

You've got the statistics of your age/experience cohort against you. You cannot do much about your age but you can improve your statistical probability of causing an accident via being an advanced driver - not just for the IAM test but in all your driving.
