Please point out any important faults I should look for when buying a first Pajero. I have found the '96 SWB 2.8 that looks so nice, but will need to assess it quickley when I go to buy. Are there any major points that should make me walk away? Ta.

Hi Ned,

much of this is already covered within the 'newbie' forum, but I'll kick off ...

Although the tdi's are often quite smokey when first imported, especially on hard acceleration, they should not be excessively smokey.

On the 2.5 tdi, the belts should be new for any import - as a rule of thumb, they should be changed every 60,000 miles (approx 96,000 km)

There should be NO sign of rust, but watch out, it won't be under-sealed - there's no need in Japan.

The whole car should be very clean & in great condition.

Check you can use each of the 4wd options.

Make sure that you get the full range of gear functionality (auto) including use of o/d.

Check the headlamp washers are working (you need the lights on for them to work - press the button on the end of the light stalk)

If it's not newly imported, check that the pitman arm has been replaced (free job by mitsi on applicable models).

It should have a mph facia on the speed dial, (although it can still record Km on the odo).

Check that the inclinometer floats freely - there should be no air-bubble in it.

Check that all four tyres match, are in good condition with plenty of tread ... the spare should match too!

Check that ALL the locks work, both on central locking and independently.

Check for a full tool kit in the rear door - there's no real reason why any parts should be missing, other than the fact that they can fetch quite a bit on 'e bay' Wink

Make sure it has a recent full service & recent MOT!

I'm sure there's more, but I'm drying up a bit here ...

Finally, browse this and the 'technical FAQ' sections ... there's loads of invaluable info to help you make your decision.

Simon.

Check the disc's aren't warped you might not be able to see this but if you drive the vehicle for a while, just enough for the discs to get hot, break softly, not enough to stop the beast just enough to engage the pads on the disc's and if you get a pumping sensation under your foot a bit like the sensation you get from ABS then they are warped, I had this problem, and fortunately enough I got my trundle truck from Prestatyn who replaced them all and the pads for free, however you could be looking at about £500 at somewhere like Quick fit etc. The head honcho mechanic at Prestatyn thinks it might be to do with the type of metal/steel they use in Japan, not as good as the British stuff which makes them prone to warping a common fault.

Just for the record, discs generally don't warp (its a myth) check out this link which I nicked from the FTO OC site (FTO's have *beep* brakes too):
http://www.stoptech.com/whitepapers/warped_rotors_myth.htm
should make it all clear.

Yes I had this same problem on a Mk2 pajero , but checked both discs on the vehicle with a DTI gauge and they were perfect.
That turned out to be just the pads , but im a qualified Mec. and if I was not paying for the parts I would have renewed both Crying or Very sad

Can we get 'if buying a 2.5 TDI check which diff ratio' the vehicle is using by checking the Trans Axel part of the VIN plate added to this.

and pointing out that if you do lots of motorway, the 5.285 on the 2.5 TDI is a big no-no as I'm currently finding out Sad

make sure you know how much these cost to run both 2.5 and 2.8
do not do many to the gallon mines a 2.5td the best is 28. mpg
the 2.8 goes better up hills but can still drop to 17mpg

starting can and is a problem with the 2.5 when cold

buget for injector pump seal rebuild or ask if its been done

check the radio you may need an expander

do check the cd player as this can cost a lot to fix

check and run the air con (may need a re/charge)

you may need a cat 2 or 1 alarm to get insurance

mpg is the big factor otherwise very very smooth to drive trans a dream

i do mostly motorway travel mine cruises along very well at 65/70
gives at best 29.6 mpg overdrive cuts in dead on 50mph

over 75/80 mph is ok but fuel mpg drops faster!!!

2.8 overdrive cuts in at 60 mph (this can work against you on back roads)

the only other niggle was buzzing sound like bees from dash area at
certain speeds (turned out to be windscreen trim taped it over 12 months
ago and not a sound since

still may sell mine athough its great to drive cold starting is a pig
and mpg can make fat wallet .

as others say just drive it fill it drive it dirty it if you can

I couldn`t insure mine without an immobiliser, although it was only 140 pound to have one fitted it is still worth checking it has one.

Check the gearbox oil on an Auto box, should always be clean - mine wasn't (ouch - one recon box later!!!).
Moon roofs - check it opens fully and does not jam!

Wheel nuts on standard and after market alloys are often different standard are square faced and after market are tappered. So if like us check that spare is the same as the rest of the wheels if not purchase Milnersetc the correct nuts or get your dealer to supply some. We learnt this fact after a blowout. We were lucky no damage done
