going from 2wd to 4wd on its own??!!

got my first shogun this morning, a 3000 v6 swb 12v 1994. loving so far, very few niggles other than 4wd system.

i've read the guides and think i understand it all but am wondering what is causing my car to go from 2wd to 4wd on its own?

sometimes i cannot get it back into 2wd, but i have always eventually got there with a bit of reversing and jiggling.

i'm guessing i have a sticky actuator, but is it possible my vacuum tank is leaking causing it to go from 2wd to 4wd on its own? whats the best way to fault find on the super select?
