Thanks Paul -- found that. I've already removed and re-installed AVG, it's OK at the moment, if it does it again I'll know why.

I will also recommend AVG.

Once a week we also run MalwareBytes. This has to be started manually or via task manager as only the paid for version can be scheduled and provide realtime protection. It has picked up *beep* missed by Spybot Search and Destroy.  It doesn't hurt to run CCleaner once in while to clear any *beep* out of the system.

I do visit some right dodgy sites in a professional capacity and most if not all of the bad stuff gets caught. Though if I do get a baddy on my works machine it gets flattened, wiped and reinstalled.

Rabbiter - is this legal? It says in the article they're unsure whether or not the product code has been leaked.

I used to use AVG but had a few problems with the updates on V8 so I then changed to Avast. No problems with Avast so far.

I use AVG on my netbook and Avast on the big home computer.
Both are excellent in my opinion, although avast does seem to use up more processor resources so is more suited to more powerful machines.
I also use zone alarm firewall with both (again...another freebie)

I prefer Avria free version as it has a faster scanning engine that AVG.
I used to be a fan of AVG, but always hated the 4 + hours i would take to scan my laptop HD on a weekly scan , after it let a nasty through changed my mind and did not like version 9 of AVG. So I changed to Avria free edition
Much faster scan engine and so far has performed fine.

I use Archlinux, but I still prefer to have an anti-virus for scanning stuff before I send it to someone running windows.  ClamAV is a pretty good one, and they have a windows version too.  If anyone is looking for an alternative for AVG I would check it out.
