|
|
I know it's been done to death but I thought if I did a write up on the winch install then it would spur me on to finish it..... so
This is the starting point
Here is the intended victim
I got to here and the heavens opened so came indoors.....
This is the plate I have got it's 8mm so I think it will be OK, what do you think??? I have the other piece thats standing up in the photo but that is 6mm...
I plan on welding the plates direct to the top of the chassis rails, but this will be finalised when I get the bumper and front panel off...
More to follow... soon I hope.....
Any tips/advice please chip in

when we did my mk1 mount we cut the bumper mounts off the chassis and welded the plate direct to the chassis, then we cut the thickness of the plate off the bumper mounts and loosly bolted them back on to the bumper, then we lined it all back up and welded the mounts to the winch mounting plate, bumper lined up perfectly even got the bullbars back on. them after much fitting and removal we trimmed the bumper so the fairlead came through nice and tidy. you'll probably hasve to trim the front panel and the grill to clear your winch, mine is a tiny trailer winch so no need.
looks good so far, good luck with it and post some more piccies. |

just noticed your using two narrow plates, i'd personally go for one wide one, much stronger and more to weld to. |

Its 50mm x 8mm plate so it's very strong, I will put some joiners in it to bridge them in places with the 6mm plate, may even seam weld the 6mm and 8mm together to make a wide plate.... the metal shown was all I could beg at the time!!! trying to do it cheap as poss...
I'll think about doing what you did but I might leave the mounts alone for now as I may do a body lift of even a replacement bumper and then the mounts would change anyway.... am still very much at the thinking stage.... untill the welder comes out!!!
Thanks for the advice

Hi
Did some more today, sun came out so it was very pleasant.
Took the rest of the front off
Put the winch on a temp mount to try the front panel and bumper for fitment
Decided to weld some bent angle to the chassis legs to bolt a plate to, so clean up the legs
Tack on the angle
Clamped a bar between them to align them, then thought may as well weld it in as well....
Welded all round the angle on both sides
Made a template for the metal plate
Etch primer the whole lot
Started to make a large plate out of the three pieces I had
All in one now
You can see how thick this is, 8mm at the edges and 6mm in the middle
Try out for size
And the winch
See how much to cut out the front panel
Front panel cut
Fits behind it all nicely
Stone chipped the whole lot...
Bolted plate and winch down
Refit bumper to work out hole for fairlead
All back together and looking nice, just got to refit the bash plate and wire it up

Hi
Thanks for the comments. The solinoid is mounted to the support just above the winch, it came with short cables so it had to go there, the controls are the only thing I haven't got, can't decide on a remote control or a wired one.... I think I might fit a switch inside for the moment and worry about it later.... There is a winch shop in Hull and I'll get them to make up some power cables to the correct length, I've got an isolator for it, will have a look later to see where I can fit it and take it from there...
Dawn I'm sorry the pink just clashed with the blue....
