Hi All
Does anyone know how many litres of propane gas it takes to fill a 6kg bottle
I ave been looking at buying an adaptor to refill my bottles and would like to know if it works out cheaper than buying a ready filled botte
Thanks for any help or comments

I've looked at these as well
Quote: |
One litre of LPG weights 500grams
so 6kg bottle holds 12 litres of LPG
13kg bottle takes 26 litres |
- this is pulled off a sellers' site, but others say to just fill to 80%
so, anyway how does this work out price wise?

Hi
Thanks for the reply
I think the LPG is about 58p a litre at the pumps so I work that out about £16
That I think is a bit cheaper

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT fill up with those figures.
Ive been refilling mine for 2 years, ive even fitted my own filling system to my car as i was fed up lumping bottles in and out and some garages refusing to let me fill.
80% is what ALL gas bottles are filled to. They have to allow for 2 things:
1. expansion of the liquid in the bottle at different temperatures;
2. the expansion and pressure will literally *blow* AND WILL OVERFLAME any device such as cooker/fire etc etc.
All you will hear is a whoosh and the pressure and flame will shoot up the caravan wall. If your lucky not much damage, if not your vans gone and your dead.
80% isnt a guide, its a steadfast rule. Play with LPG and dont respect its pressure and you will get it wrong.
Filling the bottles works like this:
litres are roughly halk a kilo in weight, so a 6kg bottle will hold approx 12 litres of gas. BUT use the 80% and just fill to 10 litres, which at a garage will cost you around £5.50.
If you keep to nice round numbers its easy.
So a 13kg doubled will take 26 litres. again using the 80% fill up to 20 litres.
6kg = 10 litres
13kg = 20 litres.
You can go over the 20 to 22 on a 13, but thats absolute maximum.
Keep in mind that your bottle is never empty, there is always liquid left but no pressure to expel it. |

While im on a roll:
It IS NOT illegal to fill your own bottles.
It is NOT ALLOWED to fill calor or any other dealers bottles as you never actually own the bottle, you only ever rent it.
Calor wont allow garage forecourts to let you fill because you can fill your own for a £5, or exchange it for £18. Who do you think is making the profit for the same gas. Not Calor.
I have found some that will turn a blind eye, which suits me.
But where i am there is only 3 garages that sell it, so i fitted a kit to my Sport to allow me to fill the same way as filling up an LPG car, now i can pull into any garage anywhere and just "fill up". |

Yes, I think so, just the reds, as that is propane, the blues are butane, but both are LPG .... ? hmm - confusing !!

Hi All
Well I have just refilled my gas bottles 2x6 kilos and 1x13 kilo bottles
Total cost £23 00
No problems at all and what a saving
I reckon it would have cost me about £52.00 if I had exchanged them in a garage

Not bad - just cost me £40 for 2 x 13kg exchanges
pity we don't have an lpg station round here - but at these price differences, worth getting some extra bottles, to fill up when convenient
what adapter did you use?

Hi Mark
I intend to fill up 3 or 4 bottles at a time that way it will only be 1 trip to the garage
A couple of my mates in the caravan club are going to share the cost of the adaptor so we will all benefit
I purchased it on that site we dont mention on here
Best place I found to get some empty bottles was our local tip
They sell them for a couple of quid each
Regards
