Not heard of manuals reving, usually the autos. It will be something to do with the pump, are there any other issues?
Stalling, knocking on start up, lack of power ?

The diesel injection pump, there is only one and it is electronically controlled. The throttle is fly by wire, so there is no mechanical connection between the pedal and the pump.
There has been a few with this problem hopefully one of them will say how they fixed it. As I cant remember which topic it is in.

Have a look through some of the fuel pump topics might give you an idea.

Geodrome is there not a throttle sensor (tps) that folk go on about ?

Can remember folk talking about replacing them?

There is lots of sensors, sometimes a relatively cheap one like the speed sensors, the TPS is part of the rotorhead and a major repair. There is also the switch on the throttle pedal, but I would nod try adjusting that as it needs to be set up by a dealer.
I am holding back from suggesting the slow speed side of the pump is failing as he does not have all the symptoms yet.
It might be worth cleaning the EGR system and the inlet manifold, especially the outlet to the boost sensor, small pipe on side of manifold.
His problem is not the one I ever suffered from, so I don't have a definite fix. Confused

There is a throttle position sensor.

On the rear of the throttle pedal is a potentiometer and this has two fixed positions, these are a microswitch when the throttle is released which activates the enginei dle map, and one when given full throttle which gives it full bananas, in between these positions there is a variable resistor which alters its resistance in relation to the throttle position. so there is a TPS but not a separate one as in most applications as the earlier injection systems.

The fault could be something as simple as removing the potentiometer and cleaning it with a good electrical cleaner, a floor mat jamming the throttle pedal open, or just muck around the potentiometer.

Don not remove the unit from the pedal assembly, it is a sealed unit and you cannot get cleaner into it. I tried, all you can spray is the plug. There is a throttle position switch on the pump, this is the one that goes.
Throttle pedal

Pump position switch

Bottom of switch

This part connects to the rotor head in the pump, and this is the main area for pump failure. Due to corrosion cause by moisture.
Unfortunately this is the expensive and scarce bit.
