hi all- problem solved
so after all the messing around looking at front seal, filter, stack pipes, primer unit, map sensors, tps, ecu, emission control, and reading some utter rubbish, basically if your 140bhp pajero (and delica) the one with the electronic diesel control pump (edc) in my case the 104701 3002 version, -has idle and tick over issues (much worse when cold and shifting between D and R) with surging with puffs of black smoke, and poor uptake on low throttle above idle then its the fuel pump.
I should have listened to my local bosch repair centre as he said this from day one- this couldn't be confirmed as he got rid of his test rig a long time ago.
seams to be a very common issue on these models and at least some sellers on some sites are notifying potential buyers of the issue.
diesel bob wasn't the answer either, found someone on my doorstep Tyne electro diesel who exchanged out my unit via one of their automotive companies with a reconditioned one.
the exchanged unit cost a lot of money but I must have spent the same money messing around- so if anyone has similar issues whilst expensive and specialised go straight to the fuel pump! you will save yourselves time and grief. |

Hi ,
Just found this interesting post , I have just bought a 1996 Pajero 2.8TD , it’s in excellent condition and has had a small fortune spent on it , one issue is a rough tick over as described in this post ,perhaps not as bad but definitely something wrong. I’ve not driven it much to see if it’s there all the time but I’m guessing it is , previous owner has had a full ‘as new’ pump rebuild Zexel EDC ,a complete new injector system , new glow plugs , sensors , etc etc and I’m not thinking he has been trying to solve this issue .
Darren reckons the pump solved the problem but not in my case .... to be honest it’s not bothering me too much but perhaps the more I drive the vehicle it might become more of an issue . |

Hi Darren , i tried to message you but I don’t have enough posts submitted , interesting reading and same issue and repairs as mine ,except even though mine has had a “as new “ pump reconditioned, new pump seals and all and more than you tried I still have the rough tick over . Thankfully all the works to mine (£3500) was done before my ownership but I do get annoyed when some owners are adamant they know the cause only to be proved wrong . Anyway I was wondering if yours has been 100% cured since you had the pump done . |

sorry not to answer the last post, its been too long since i logged in- yes mine has been running like a dream, no smoke smooth, really lively, passed mot no issues, as i said i should have listened to the bosch chap first he used to rebuild these pumps. tyne electro diesel even though specializing in marine diesels the manger recognized the pump type straight away. the only issue i believe is whilst the kits are available to rebuild the internals, the electronic heads are no longer available. the front pump seal is a common issue on all the paj/shogun diesels but this only causes the cutting out after about 10 mins of driving and another 5 mins of trying to restart and clear the air lock, but does not effect the tick over and idle. one thing i did do though is when swopping out the injectors i didnt correctly torque one down home which gave some strange but in hindsight expected starting smoke which changed colour and effected idle - but the idle was consistently slightly off. if you have the same cold surging idle and black puffs every so often it sounds to me the pump wasn't rebuilt and maybe the front seal was all that was done.
the later edc mk2 pajero is fairly rare compared to the manual pump version and having done a little research it appears this was available along side the manual one in japan for a period of time, but the edc version was sold in no other country expect japan unless as a jdm import. the similar aged delica has the same pump type. if anyone is keeping an edc pajero long term would suggest getting a hold of spare working pump- i have one just in case.
as its getting colder i would expect the issue to get worse on start ups and initial warm ups.
hope this helps |

Many thanks Darren , I’m really loving my Pajero and the tick over is fairly infrequent and never lasts long , I should look out for a spare pump ....thanks for your input |
