Hi all
Had my 2010 197bhp LWB now for 5 years, done 40k miles, it has been a great truck with few issues so far.
However it seems really heavy on rear brake pad wear. In 40k I think I’ve been through 4 sets of rear pads. The fronts I think I’ve changed once in that time.
In addition, from properly washing the car, within a hundred or so miles the rear wheels are nearly black with brake dust whilst the fronts are still clean.
To add, I’ve been through the brakes pretty thoroughly, rebuilt both rear calipers with pistons seals and slide pins, it’s also had a pair of front calipers as 1 pot was seized on each. Front calipers prob 30k ago and no difference to rear pad wear before/after.

So really I’m wondering is there something wrong with it, or are they all like it?

Certainly not normal Tom and the brake dust shows the pads are in contact with the discs to wear them, so is it the rear pads or the brake shoes? I would suggest checking.

Lift the rear of the vehicle, start the engine and get someone to apply the footbrake and try and turn the wheel, obviously it should not turn; release the footbrake and it should turn by hand and if not the pads are not releasing. Put a wheel brace on each rear wheel and try to undo a not and if they undo without the wheel turning then the rear pads are locked.

Switch the engine off and pump the footbrake several times to discharge the pressure in the braking system and try the wheel brace on the wheels again and they should turn before the wheel nuts undo, you have proven the rear brakes are pressurised if the nuts undo before the wheel spins if you restart the engine and they lock you have proven something is pressurising them with the engine running only.

You now really need a good diagnostics reader and run a check on the system, as these have the integrated ABS and traction control it could be any of the sensors faulty, if they read faulty then try a reset; it could be the traction control partially braking the rear wheels as it is showing wheel spin so check the dash light and put it on wet grass and deliberately spin the rear wheels and check the light comes on and the engine power is cut.

Pull the traction/ABS fuse/relay and repeat this again and see if the rear wheels lock up as it should default to manual braking and cut the ABS/traction control and the rear wheels should be free, if not you have discounted the traction control system and it is either binding calipers or a fault somewhere else mechanical in the system.
