Hi all, I have come across an article on how to update the firmware of the MMCS unit. Is this something that is recommendable or not that much of a requirement? Subject car is a 2016 MK4 with a E12 MMCS unit.
Cheers

Can you share the source article?

Generally unless there is an important fix or added feature you need there isn't any pressing reason. I know sometimes it hard to resist the urge to have the "latest" !

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mitsubishi+MMCS+NR-242+Firmware+Update/161263

I haven’t yet done anything as regards trying to load the download to my unit. I would hate to end up with a cocked up MMCS. I agree that it would be nice to have the latest software but I am a firm believer in “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it “

My prime activity is working with computer systems, embedded devices (such as the MMCS), and in particular low-level topics including firmware (writing, fixing, reverse-engineering, etc.).

With that knowledge here's my opinion on your shared link:

1. The offered firmware files are not provided by Mitsubishi
2. There is no way to verify the firmware is genuine or has not been modified (by anyone other than Mitsubishi)
3. There is no Change-log detailing what bugs are fixed or features added
4. There is no way to determine a level of trust in the person that uploaded the file(s) to the Internet Archive
5. There is no way to be sure it does not violate the Mitsubishi copyright (I would expect these files are only legally distributed to dealerships)

I'd strongly recommend enquiring directly with Mitsubishi or one of their authorised dealers about any known firmware updates and asking for the change-log to determine if there is a fix for a function you require.

Additionally I'd want to know a cryptographic hash of the authorised firmware files to compare against the files you intend to use in order to verify they have not been modified. I've generated the MD5, SHA1 (SHA 128 bit) and SHA2 (SHA 256 bit) hashes for you in case you can get those from Mitsubishi:
Code:

$ java -jar /usr/local/bin/jacksum-3.6.0.jar -a md5+sha1+sha256 -s "\t" -F "#FILENAME#SEPARATOR#ALGONAME{i}#SEPARATOR#HASH{i}" *.LOADING.KWI
Launching java via /usr/my/bin/java
NOTE: Picked up JDK_JAVA_OPTIONS:   -Dsun.java2d.dpiaware=true -Dsun.java2d.uiScale=100% -Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=on -Dswing.boldMetal=false -Dswing.plaf.metal.controlFont='TisaSansWeb03-Light-10' -Dswing.plaf.metal.userFont='TisaSansWeb03-Light-10'

Thanks for your valued reply. That’s just what I was looking for the opinion of someone “in the know “. On the strength of this I won’t be taking things further.
Best regards
