suspect its a coincidence, unless for some reason they removed the a/c compressor to do the job(possible) but didn't regas the system.

Hi Paul,
Have you checked the a/c compressor drive belts are fitted correctly as they might have been removed during the water pump work. Also check the wire supplying power to the coil on the front of the compressor. Follow this back and you should come to an in line connection somewhere behind the nearside headlight - make sure this has'nt been disconnected.
Failing that they might of broken into the aircon system for extra room and let the refrigerant escape (if this was straight to atmosphere then they've broken the law). If this is the case the system will need to be checked out, pressure tested with nitrogen, vacuum de-hydrated to remove all of the air and moisture in the system and re-charged with the correct weight of the correct refrigerant. If you were running a R12 system (no longer available legally) you can have the system fullt retro-fitted to R134a or use a drop-in replacment refrigerant such as RS24 which is a much cheaper option as it requires no system comonent changes (filter/drier) and runs on the same oil as the old R12 systems ie. mineral 5GS.
Hope this is of some help
