OK

So I was missing the belt that links the engine to the AIR CON compressor (or whatever it is)..

I picked one up from our local motor factors for about a fiver.

Fitted it no problem. Adjusted the flywheel to take up the slack...

Now when I start the engine all seems ok. no whines no screeches ... just a normal sounding engine (and yes the compressor flywheel is rotating....)

When I turn on the Air Con inside the car I hear what sounds like a fan in the engine bay start up - but no cold air inside. I also DONT notice and dip or change in engine revs.

QUESTION - Is this sound normal - should I be expecting any other noises / changes ??

Could it just be that the system needs regassing ???

Any thoughts ??

FYI - its a 1996 2.5L SWB.

Thanks all..

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,
I come across this quite a lot where people take the belt off after the air con has been diagnosed with a problem and they dont want the work carried out right away. The worst case would be the compressor is defective but on the other hand it may well just need re-gassing.
I'm based in Gosport and am fully mobile so if you would like me to take a look and let you know what state the system is in and what needs doing you can call me on 0781 260 7592.

Thanks for the offer..

Can was purchased at Supreme Cars in Segensworth.. As its got warranty - the garage have asked that I take the car to them to be fixed / investigated further - which I understand...

I'll keep you in mind though - if anything needs doing after the warranty has run out...

Thanks again

Ok

The Air Con man is going to be at the dealers on Thursday so I'm droppign the car off with them for the day.

They said he'll re-gass it and check for leaks (theres a dye in the gas)..

If its all fires up Ok then Im a happy man...

Not sure why re-gassing would help if there's no dip in revs when i turn on the air con....

I understand that - but my question is...

If theres no gas - shouldnt the car still dip in revs when i press the air con button ?? after all - doesnt the button engage the compressor in the engine ?

There is a presure switch and if the gas is low the compressor will not come on so there will be no change in the revs

AAAAAAAAAAAH Superb....

OK so once - re-gassed - if when the Air con is switched on it makes some kind of horrible noise - there's another problem Smile

But if it all works ok and theres no leaks then it should be ok...

(still concerns me though as to why there was no belt in the 1st place...)

Now I know why there was no BELT.....

Because the compressor (or whatever it is) is faulty....

They filled it with GAS and started the engine. switched on Air con and it diddnt work.... (not too sure of the details).

Well at least I get a nice new one under warranty....
