Hi guys I have read many threads on the problems and soloutions of diesel pump seals failing and the various cost of repair, and thought that I should explain the different types of repair method that will give rise to the different levels of cost.

firstly the reasons and symptoms of this type of problem.

1. white smoke from exhaust on startup.

2. starting okay but cutting out after a short journey (anywhere from 100 yards to 1 mile)

these are all problems caused by air getting into the diesel line through the pump and starving the engine of fuel or exhausting unused diesel through the exhaust pipe. (white smoke)

I have read here some costings of around £200 and some that go up to £800 0r more the reason for this is that there are 2 remedies used by various garages the first being

removal of the front engine and replacement of the main seal, this can be done in place without removing the pump from the vehicle and is a short term soloution which usually cost in the region of £250 and is sometimes adequate where the seal alone is the problem!!!!

unfortunately in most cases this is not a long term cure-all and as the rest of the seals and the housing of the pump has also suffered the same wear and tear as the main seal it requires overhaul and replacement, this requires removal and repair and the costings then rise to the higher figures of £800 plus, this needs to be carried out by an authorised diesel service engineer and most garages won't even attempt this themselves.

Both of these jobs are complicated and not doing them correctly can lead to major problems with timing and fuel delivery so I am sorry to say its bite the bullet time guys and get your hands in your pockets Evil or Very Mad
