Hi all. New on here and just wondering how everybody goes about getting the SVA test on the Challenger 2.8td. Its a 1996 model so I didnt think a model report was needed but VOSA state it needs a "Protective Steering" test.

Is this true, and if so will a report from a Pajero or L200 suffice?

Thanks in advance.

Cars over 10 years old do not need an SVA, just an MOT.

Cars under 10 years old but made before 1/1/97 need an SVA but no model report.

Post 1/1/97 cars need the extended SVA test with the model report.

Yours might be a 1996 model but when was it first registered in Japan? Perhaps its post 1/1/97?

If on the other hand it was first registered early in 1996, you could wait until its 10 years old and save some cash!

I agree with waiting till its tenth birthday it will save a few hundred quid.

Unless its changed (and I know a few things have) all 4x4 had to have the model report for protective steering and noise even if they where manufactured before 97.

Mine did but thats 3 years ago and I know its changed.

I will have to find the site again that tells you if the model report has been done or not, be back soon.

I keep wondering if its worth importing one in its 9th year and waiting to get it on the road, I presume there is an impact on their value in Japan until they hit 10 years old.

Sorry Grinder..... but I have to slightly correct what you said here. My October 96 Paj DID need a model report for "protective steering". There wasn't one listed on VOSA website, but Far East Services (www.importedvehicles.co.uk) faxed a model report for the LWB version of my SWB to VOSA & they accepted it as on comparison the steering was the same. Speak to them with the model number & also to VOSA before submitting it for the SVA because lack of the required report will mean a 'fail'. Once VOSA agree it then it's down to the testing station to inspect & approve what you have.

If it's early 96 then best advice is certainly to wait til it's over 10 yrs then only MOT needed.

Thanks for that, do I feel stoopid now! Wink Smile

To be honest I have only brought in non-off roaders. Our Legnum is 4x4 but only an estate car, of course.

At least I got the debate going!

Not stoopid Laughing we all learn from this site that's the good thing about it. I went into the SVA quagmire feeling very stoopid but thankfully me & my Paj emerged from the process a happy couple!

I got my Paj from Southampton docks and was told if i chose the the 95 model i wanted, then it would have to have the SVA test. If it had been a year older then then it wouldnt so going by that i guess yours needs it.
