the egr valve seemed to be working ok. but i cleaned it anyway i also blanked the vacume pipe off which goes to the egr valve with a ballbearing. we then set off to cornwall with the caravan. when we arrived at the site the front of the the caravan was black as coal. so wilst i was down there i tret it to some redex it was the same when we arrived home. i did notice on the way back when it is in top gear about 55/60 mph it does put out quiet a bit of black smoke. and when you kick down it seems not as bad. the 2.5 paj as 84000 klms on the clock its had new filters new oil and new cam belts. i also averaged 19/20 miles to the gallon with the caravan on the the back. 80 liters of fuel and 552 klm which is roughly 19 to the gallon. does anyone know what might be wrong. i have had the exhaust changed at the rear so now it comes out at the side..

So you cleaned the EGR then blocked the vacuum line to stop it working? Surely it would be better to try it with it working first. The general consensus is that the ball bearing method does not work and you have to blank the EGR itself. (If the EGR leaks, the blocked pipe will do nothing).

You also have to look to book the car into a diesel specialist because you will alter the mixture with the blanking. Think about getting them to check your injectors as well.
