Hi Simon, avoid the lacquer as if it is hit and chipped it peels off, much better to clean them back and regularly polish.

Thanks Assassin, but I've found that if you leave then unlacquered they go cloudy very quickly. I then lacquered them a couple of years ago and they've remained clear. If the surface is properly prepared, that's going to minimise chipping and peeling.  I can see no evidence of either on mine.

You're welcome Simon, I have seen numerous lacquer problems with plastic which is why I said avoid it, many types of lacquer also yellow over time which is the reason I do mine with toothpaste and a damp cloth and then polish them.

I polish my vehicles regularly, well, all except the Unimog, and polishing the headlights isn't a problem.
