|
|
Hi, I have recntly bought a Pajero 2.8 TD, 1996 and I have several problems with it. My main problem is the gear change. In the morning I have about a 5 mile trip to work and it very rarely gets into top gear. If it gets into top gear just a mm on the gas and it changes back down immediately. I towed a trailer to Abergavenny over the weekend and I think I dove most of the way in third gear. Any help would really be appreciated. |

try and adjust the TPS on top of the fuel pump,
undo the 2 securing screws, turn slightly, re-tighten and test. |

Thanks for the info I will give that a try tomorrow. The link looks good but I'm still not sure of the screw I need to adjust. I dont have a manual so it would be a guess on my part. Does the intercooler have to come off. |

Yes, intercooler off, loosen the two screws retaining the TPS, (the round black device immediately below the water hose in Knightstorms link/pic) and turn it fully anticlockwise in it's slots. Retighten & reassemble etc. The ECU will now think your foot is not down as far as before at any given throttle position and not be so eager to kickdown or jump out of overdrive.
Check the kickdown cable adjustment while you're in there too. |

Thanks for the details. I now think I know which one it is and looking at it from the side it looks like it is adjusted fully clockwise so plenty of space to turn it anticlockwise as you suggest. Is there anywhere I can find out how to do the cable adjustments as I dont have a manual. |

Sorry fellas for jumping in with never even having looked under the bonnet of one but doesn't the tps have an electronic feed to the gearbox ecu ?
On petrol cars you can measure the tps voltage with a meter 0-5 or 0-1 or whatever it may be. Surely thats your easiest way to set it up or diagnose it being faulty ?
Apologies for being thick by the way ! |

I think that will depend upon whether it is the mechanical or electrical fuel pump............ in 1996 they changed over, so I guess it could be either. |

Thanks Knightstorm for the link re cable adjustments but the diagram he mentions isn't actually on there. He says "here it is" but no diagram. Am I missing something or am I just being dumb. |

Have tried your suggestions and it is a little better because before when it finally reached top gear it would change down almost immediately but now that doesn't happen but it is still reluctant to go into top gear. However I have noticed that when you reach 60 it goes in straight away but not before. |
