Is it using coolant? White smoke could be steam.
Might be worth trying the condom test!
Take the radiator cap off and put an un-used condom over the filler cap socket. If it inflates there is a problem with the head.
Try swapping the two speed sensors over, the one on the side is a backup.

think you need to get it pluged into a proper mitsubishi computer to determine whats wrong !! less guessing involved as when you are guessing you are spending money foolishly , just trying to help  Wink

i understand but my friend diagnose faults for the the large companies and is his business so fairly confident he knows his stuff when it comes to fault codes or is there a chance Mitsubishi would find different codes, its a little worrying when i read on the forum to be careful of certain places to take your car unless you have bags of money because they spend most there time just replacing all the sensors till they hit the jackpot at your expense which seems logical in a way,,, basically the same as we are trying but for a third of the price,, Rolling Eyes ,, not saying its easy mind,as it already becoming frustrating and i wish i had bags of money to just hand it over....any input would be helpful if you please, and if i hit the problem i will let you know,  if i don't do you know any good breakers who would buy for parts,,,its in bloody good condition,,, Laughing ,,

What age is you truck, from memory has to be a mutt reader if it's an earlier model. Mits dealers are about the only ones who have these. Don't think snap on solus even work on the early models.

mine is an 04 too and i had a suspecious pump fault (loosing power ) i thought i was looking at a new pump and anybody i spoke to scared the cr*p out of me about this engine (3.2did) a local well know pump specialist refused to even look at her as he said the last one he worked at nearly put his lights out , well i done what i should have done on the first place and booked it into the local mits garage (£70 +vat)  after about 30 minitues the teck guy called me out and explained everything that was going on (the fault had vanished that day btw) well he was able to go into the pump and show me all teck things like volts and what mine was reading and what it should have been at different reves etc etc , you get the picture !! he was able to see everything and not a code number mentioned , well it turned out that the main pump speed sensor had been showen to have stuck in the past but was working perfect again so he said that if it lost power again to just change that sensor , not like i here mentioned on here all the time (its one or the other pump sensor thats gone ) he knew the exaxt one that was being faulty ,
as i said earlier , from my experiance with different car manufactures  these ppl with universal computer stuff can do a lot but if you want model exact details sorted go to a GOOD main dealer ! lets just say in my case it was the best £70 i ever spent ! good luck btw

A good dealer is worth going to, as in the long run could save a lot.
Pump faults can be expensive, there is only six or so places that can rebuild them. As they need a special testrig to set them back up.
When the pump fails it usually stops sending fuel to the engine, as it leaks past the seals. Then the car wont start.
As kenscher says get it on the MUT for a full test.
