Coolant Engine Block Drain Plugs on the side of the engine 4D56 2.5 and 4M40 2.8
When draining the radiator antifreeze and water mix you need to also drain the engine block
by removing a hexagon plug.
On the 2.8 4M40 , using a ratchet with long extension and a 12mm socket, the plug is just behind the rim that the oil filter screws up to in this photo:

A medium size flat blade screwdriver twisted into the hole should rake out the crud so prepare to have gungy black water cascading over your arm when it works. Don't do it when the engine is HOT.
Credit to Davemp for providing the location!

The 2.5 4D56 Engine has one directly in the side of the block

Credit to coloursphotographic for the location photo!

Best to drain as much as you can, refit the bottom hose (quickest way to drain the rad) and block plug, refill adding a flushing product & run as per intructions, allow to cool then drain & reflush with clean water. Empty it all again then refill using 50 / 50 mix of neat antifreeze and Distilled water (de-ionised water) available for just over a pound for a 2 litre tube at Asda etc. Two tubs of this water and 5 litres anti-freeze for a 2.8 is plenty with spare for top-up. Clean out the expansion tank & fill with the same 50 / 50 mix.
You can remove one of the bulkhead heater matrix hoses where it fits to the cylinder head and push a garden hose or watering can into the rubber hose to flush the matrix and engine or squirt a hosepipe into the thermostat housing if you remove it to fit a new thermostat.
Don't use tap water to permanantly refill the cooling system unless you have very soft mains water or your cooling system will scale up like an old kettle, your heater won't work & your engine will cook itself.
Do not leave antifreeze or antifreeze mixed with water in unmarked bottles or tubs and do not leave it where young children can get to it - it is very dangerous if ingested ! !
Check the expansion pipe from rad top to plastic tank is very clean , if it's blocked it will cause the radiator to burst!

Thanks for the picture. Also use a very long and thin screwdriver as mine had so much *beep* in it, i had to dig for 10 minutes to get the coolant flowing.

I will be doing this soon. Is it practical to put a small funnel and piece of plastic tubing below the hole? This way I can hopefully drain off the water without it getting all over the engine compartment.

Those photos are from underneath the vehicles, after draining the system via the bottom hose there isn't much pressure left so any coolant remaining will drain straight down into your bowl / bucket. It's then easy enough to wipe the area with a rag, clean up the hole & refit the plug.
Make sure the radiator neck stub pipe for the expansion pipe is clear - the stub is a few mm but the orifice in the neck for it is TINY!

Always make sure your cabin heater is turned to Maximum Temperature when you do this and when you refill.
For refilling, it helps to run the front wheels up onto ramps etc. to help remove any air.
When it's full at the radiator neck, start the engine & rev it a few times and top up again.
When it's full again at the radiator neck, run it for a couple of minutes then top up again.
Then run till it warms up, allow to cool enough so it's safe to remove the rad cap and top up again.
After you first drive out - check it again and check the expansion bottle level.

Then check it every couple of weeks, especially after you've just refilled it! Running with dodgy parts or a low coolant level will cost you time & money.

Hi all, having read all the posts available on the forum I am still struggling, partly because I can't see pictures posted on the subject for things like the block drain plug etc. So I'm stripping everything down, replacing the thermostat, radiator cap and a few hoses that look like they're ready for a change whilst I'm at it. Will flush the heater matrix separately. Still struggling to identify the block drain plug - can anyone enlighten me as to where it is please? Also if anyone can shed light on why I can't see fellow members pictures on their posts I would be grateful, it's a tad annoying!
Thanks in advance, Paul

I have just changed my coolant and remembered this thread because it had photos of the block drain plugs for both the 2.5 and the 2.8.

I found photos on an Aussie site for the 2.8.

but I didn't see any photos of the location of the drain on a 2.5.

Photos on this forum are linked from Photobucket or similar - so if they get deleted from the members account on Photobucket then they disappear from here.

It is the original one that was posted on here

Cheers Pete,
Virgin media has just ended it's web-server provision & that's where some of my images were linked from. When I get a minute I'll put them on one of my own servers but unfortunately previous posts won't show the old photos.

That's the problem with links to file sharing sites - if Photobucket etc ever finish then most forums will lose all their photos.

Thanks for the information guys, radiator, engine and heater matrices now thoroughly flushed out, new thermostat and radiator cap replaced and all is good. What would we do without the great advice so freely given to help others.

I have a secondary problem I would like to air please. My Pajero is now refusing to start when required, I get flashing green lights on the 4 wheel drive display although I haven't engaged it or recently disengaged it! ALl the usual dash lights come up but it's as if the immobiliser is still engaged! Any suggestions to resolve this issue. Here in rural France the immobiliser is a bit useless, I could leave the car open with keys in the ignition and pretty much guarantee it would still be there 6 months later! If anyone can guide me as to how I can remove this unnecessary bit of kit it may also be an answer to the problem?

I used the car twice yesterday, no problem, this morning same flashing green lights and she just won't start. Oh the joys of motoring!

Looking forward to some suggestions and hopefully sorting this issue out.

That is worth having - there are hardly any photos of them on Google.
