If my pump timing is out by a tooth would this cause a real lack of power and slow throttle response?

Could do.
When fitting a pump have engine on tdc and set pump to the mark. When the pump goes on it will turn to be one tooth away from the mark. If facing the pump from the front, I think it turns clockwise.

Thanks I know for a fact that its a tooth out as that's what the garage left it like to try and make it run before I took it back off them, spoke to Airylea motors like you said they were most helpful.

It starts perfect now but has no power and a loudish diesel knock, will get pump set correctly and see

Just wondered where is the marks on the crank to set it at top? I'm trying to see them from the top but can't yet also to set them can I use a spanner on the camshaft? I see on it it has a hexagonal part and wondered if I can use that?

Thanks for the help  Smile

Take out the glow plugs then on no1 use a thin stiff wire or dowel when it is on tdc the rod will touch the piston you will feel it rise then stop before going back down. There are timing marks on the crank pulley visable from above take the fan off.
Camshaft has marks too.

Pump in situ

How many bolts hold the pump on? I thought I have them all butthebottom still tight, I see a square headed nut on the bottom but I don't think it needs to come off

There is three and one at the back of the pump below the pipes, it catches everyone out. You need to clear all the stuff from the front, oil pump vacuum pump ac pulley etc.
I also took inlet manifold off makes a lot more space and gave it a good clean too.

Got the pump off  Very Happy   Lined up the mark on the casting with themarked tooth and put the pump in and it turned itself slightly which made it look a tooth off, it started no probs but is still slow to rev.

That is the correct way is it not? I don't need to line it up a tooth off so it lines up to the marks when I shove it in

No line it up off the car it moves one tooth out when fitted see my pic above. Its meant to move the sprockets are angled, it has to turn.
Have you got the feed and return mixed up?
What was done to the pump when the garaged had it? If it was properly rebuilt it should just bolt on and run. Mine did, though it cost me £1800 for the rebuild. (that's the average price for a full rebuild, as it needs a new rotor head.)

Ok I have the timing correct then.

Not sure about the fuel pipes, is the feed the one which bolts to the side of the pipe and the return towards the rear? The pipes are slightly different sizes.

Not found out yet what was done to the pump at the garage I just wanted to check the pump timing myself before I send it to Airylea motors to be checked over for my own peace of mind.

A company is offering a pump fully reconditioned genuine Mitsubishi for £1000+ vat

Return is the smaller pipe, feed bigger one. The part that fails is the rotor head and it is about £1200 for the part alone. It rusts!
Airylea will keep you right.
