Oh dear, I think I may have bought a bundle of trouble! The car had an ABS fault which I have sorted and I thought it also had a cracked head which I replaced with a brand new one. Unfortunately I still have bubbles and a spiking temp guage when gas replaces the water around the temp sensor. Water pump is good, removed thermostat and swapped temp sensor with the one on my car and its still happening. No white smoke so I think ERG cooler is OK but will bypass that tomorrow just in case. Only other possibilities are cracked block or possibly turbo? Anyone had a cracked turbo? I assume it would just produce coolant loss and white smoke. So if its the block where would it most likely crack? Surely the crack would have to be in a liner to pressurise the system? Any suggestions appreciated. Crying or Very sad

Is the egr cooler water or air cooled?
The water cooled ones are prone to leaks.

This sounds a similar problem to my motor , replaced the radiator ,water pump , new water temp sensor and the temp gauge in dash , What is the EGR Cooler , the car has had a plate fitted to the return to blank it off .
It also has had 3 sniffer tests dont to the head and passed them all , its driving me crazy and has give my wallet a hell of a beating

Whats it doing? If the heads cracks you usually don't get pressurisation and exploding radiator hoses like you do on the 2.8. Instead you get a puff of white smoke occasionally on start up with an accompanying missfire and excess water useage. Usually the condom test is useless and so are sniff tests because the head does not crack in the combustion area. So if you are using water and have a puff of white smoke on startup you have a cracked head. If water is being pushed into the expansion bottle and not being sucked back when the engine cools leaving an air gap in the rad check the rad cap seal. Check the front to rear heater pipes as well. The ERG cooler is only fitted to some models. You can't miss it, it has two water hoses going to it and is located on the side of the head above the exhaust manifold.

I dont get white smoke , but I have had the water getting pushed into the expansion tank and not returning , do you think a new rad cap is required ?

If you tip the expansion tank back into the radiator after it has cooled down do you need to add additional coolant? ie has water been lost or just moved from the rad to the expansion bottle? Is the expansion bottle over flowing?

Sounds like expansion bottle is filling as it should when the engine gets hot but as the engine cools the coolant is not being drawn back into the rad-air is being drawn in instead. The seal on the rad cap would be prime suspect, they perish with age you should be able to tell by looking at it-are there radial cracks in the rubber? If in doubt replace they are nice and cheap!

Just to clarify there are two seals on a rad cap, it's the larger diameter seal which sits just under the surface of the cap which usually perishes.

For best results you need a radiator cap pressure tester to check the condition of the cap seals, secondly a laser temperature sensor is a great help to check radiator cooling performance, follow all the lines, different points on the head.

Make sure you have been thru all the small possibilities BEFORE considering problems with the block.
