I know this is in the wrong place, I will ask a mod to move shortly.

I have just fitted a lovely new pair of Cooper Discovery STTs on the rear of my 3.2Did 265*75*16

They are about 40mm higher off the ground than the Cooper RT 265*70*16s on the front.

Will this be a problem in 4*4?

I say yes it will, even the Mitsubishi handbook states that you need to use the same size tyre on all 4 wheels.

It will cause it to work much harder, yes. Won't do wonders for the handling either, as you'll have quite different levels of grip between the front and rear with those different tread patterns.
Also if you're involved in an accident your insurance company may well take a dim view of it too. It's not illegal to have different diameter tyres on front and rear (must be the same on the same axle though) - but unless you tell your insurance company that you've deliberately chosen to do this, they will probably not pay out. Also they might ask why you're doing this, as it's not generally considered sensible.

All four tyres should be as close as possible to having the same overall diameter. This is why Mitsubishi tell you to rotate front and rear tyres regularly to ensure that they wear evenly.

Go and buy another two tyres so they're all the same Smile

Most definitely YES!

I'm currently running 265-65-17's on the front of ours with 265-70-16's on 8" Patrol rims on the rear. Had the caravan out last weekend and got the alarming flashing amber center-diff light after about 80 miles. Overall diameter is only 0.1% different so I believe in my case it was the weight difference between the wheels that also contributed to it. I don't know what actually happened - consulted the handbook and it said to restart, if no light then no problem, but orange light was on again 10 miles later.

Needless to say I put it in 2WD for the return journey (not ideal when towing) and its stayed in 2H since until I can match one of the pairs of tyres/wheels with another pair.  Embarassed

I'd say it's inadvisable.
I bought a car a few years ago, tested 4wd on the test drive.
Car went for a few hundred yards, then kinda dull thunk, steering was fine then car started to slow down.
Flipped it back out 4wd, another thunk.
Pulled over, checked tyre sizes, front was smaller than rear.
Bought the car anyway.
Changed tyres to same size all round, car went in and out 4wd no probs after that.
I don't know why the diffs don't take up the slack, but in my experience, I woul;dn't select 4wd with different sized tyres front to rear.
Needless to say, different sizes on same axle is a big no no.

I've been using this site for 6 years, first I've heard of it. Might be room for some improvement on the marketing side!

Anyway I'm all contributed and yellow stickered up.

Thanks

When you get the Cooper STT's fitted all round, will you post a pic, I'd like to see what they look like on the mk3 and let us know how they feel and is the body clearance good. I'm still undecided what to stick on mine.
