Has anyone replaced the steel gearbox cooler pipes that run past the bottom corner of the radiator?
The ones on my truck are looking very much past their best.
If so what was the cost to buy the parts and where from? Mitsu only? |

If you can solder you can make your own.
Remove the banjo bolts at the gearbox and drill out the pipes, replace with a piece of copper pipe and shape to length, when shaped and cut you flare the other end where it connects to the cooler rubber pipes, you need to be proficient at soldering to solder the copper to the banjo.
Solder a bracket made from a length of copper pipe slit along its length and flattened out to the copper pipes to mount them, job done. |

For the £25 or so that they cost it isn't worth the hassle of repair, if you're going to the trouble of removing it - replace it. T G Holdcrofts in Stoke keep them on the shelf because they do fail.
I did mine, bit fiddly but totally do able - intercooler needs to come off ideally as does fan shroud so that you can get your hands in.
If you don't have the correct tool for the spring clips they can be a bit of a pain because the ones near the engine are hard enough to get at even with the right tool. When replacing them don't be tempted to cheat and use 'jubilee' type clips - the spring clips are there to compensate for heating and cooling in the system.
Any use the correct hoses if you replace any - any old hose will not do. Previous owner of mine had not only bodged the metal pipes but used the wrong rubber pipes and jubilee clips - result - oil leak at every joint.
You could make them out of Kunifer though if you can get the correct ID / OD tube - but I suspect that would cost near as much as replacing.
For the extra £10 or so it would cost to buy the real deal over the other options I'd buy the real deal every day but maybe I'm just too fussy - I don't do the compromise where that could lead to breakdown. |

Thanks gents. I assumed they'd be a lot more than £25 but looking on eBay I've just ordered genuine pipes for £27 plus post. I'm all for making replacement bits myself but agree that when they can be purchased for reasonable cost its not worth the messing about. |

Make sure you paint them well Tom, this is why I prefer to make my own from copper, to prevent corrosion. |

Replaced my metal pipes with the proper type of hose a few thousand miles ago (and check regularily in case of leaks) after finding a pinprick hole on the connection to the radiator which I could have replaced but the hose method fitted my purpose at the time but what I intend to do is replace the piping and rubber hose with a complete hose system by changing the connectors to something like BSP or JIC and then get hoses made up to connect the gearbox direct to the cooler (Autobox) so to avoid a leak at one or more connections leading to the expensive fluid draining and knackering my autobox |
