No need to do either.
Its fairly straight forward although can be a complete *beep* depending on if any bolts are seized. Soak all the bolts in copius amounts of plusgas  Wink

Remove intercooler and air box.
Then remove the various bits of heat shielding around the turbo/exhaust manifold.
There's the vacuum pipe on the front - just disconnect that and tuck it out the way.

Carefully disconnect the oil feed coming onto the top of the turbo - try not to twist or bend the pipe.

There's three bolts that bolt the turbo on to the exhaust manifold - these will most likely be MEGA tight. Plusgas the f*** out of them:)
There's then four bolts that attach the exhaust exit side of the turbo onto the downpipe. Again, these will likely be MEGA tight.
I actually had to get under the motor and undo the little downpipe from the first section of exhaust pipe as the nuts for the back of the turbo onto the downpipe were seized.

When removing the turbo be careful of the oil drain pipe on the bottom which drains the oil back into the sump. There is just a spring clip on it which you should be able to get pliers on or if you have strong hands do it by hand but can be tricky.

If it helps here is a pic of just after I fitted my new turbo before I started putting everything back on.

Just a thought - Mine is a 2.8 and it had two water pipes as well as the oil pipe onto the turbo.

Some of them were oil and water cooled whereas some were just oil cooled.

I found that taking the little heatshield thing off the engine mounting gave me a bit more "wiggle room" to get the turbo out.

Why do you think a "rattle" is your turbo? Have you eliminated the possibility it could be a loose heat shield or some other simple thing before going to the hassle and possible expense of removing and replacing your turbo ?

Hope its a simple one for you

Good luck

Hi yes checked shield and other bits around turbo .when I boot the truck noise goes away runs 50/60 miles an hour very quite.just on start up tick over is fine soon as you pull away tapperty noise from turbo so that's why I think bearing as gon or some component in it..
Thank you for your help.cheers.

Try opening the airbox and listening down the pipe - when mine went you could hear the rattle much better. If the rattle doesn't get much louder then maybe not the turbo.

If you take the air hose off between the air filter box and the turbo you can get to the end of the turbo shaft.

Try moving it up and down to see if there is any play in the bearing. There should be a tiny amount but not much.

Also - I found that after having my turbo reconditioned, I still had a rattle - it turned out to be a hole in the top of the first silencer. I replaced the exhaust and I am now rattle free.

That's where my hole was - seemed to amplify the rattle.

I had mine refurbished about 6-7 years ago - cost was nearly £400.

There were new ones on eBay that were much cheaper - but having an original rebuilt by a specialist meant that I could be sure of the quality.
