So I've been replacing a turbocharger on my mitsubishi pajero 1994, brought a new one from the online market place, only to find that after replacing the wastegate is opening up as soon as you hit 2k revs, so a full restrip and I've realised the new turbo is an oil and water-cooled model, not just oil as my original was. I've been scouring the Internet for a replacement but can't seem to find one. The model number listed on the original turbo is 49377-03031.

So my question is would this firstly be the reason for the wastegate opening up too early due to the higher temp of no water connection and can anyone recommend where I can find a replacement.

Rob

Mine is oil and water cooled.

I didn't trust buying one off eBay so I had mine rebuilt at a turbo specialist,

Surely the coolant cools the turbo and the oil lubricates it?

I can't see why the lack of coolant would cause the wastegate to open prematurely. Do you have the means to measure the pressure that it's opening at?

Lack of  coolant is likely to cause premature bearing wear though.

I think the quality of eBay turbos are a bit suspect.

If you look at the prices they are about £150 on average with some even cheaper.

I paid £380 to have mine rebuilt - my reasoning is that you tend to get what you pay for.

If you have replaced the waste-gate, then replace it with the original.

I have just had my 98 turbo rebuilt by turbo dynamics, they had to source a rear housing but all in for £370 so will be cheaper than that. As for wastegate, that could be a split in the pipe to the gate, but these are very small turbos and will open early, deisel engines work on very low revs. The only problem you might have is over boosting if the wastegate contiunes to stay open but that wouldnt effect spool tho. Water cooled is really only needed for a unit that runs at high temps, obveriously having both is better, the japs designed & tested their engines alot so if mitsi think oil is only needed then its good enough ? I dont know the range of temps that a 2.8 puts out but proby less than a petrol hence only oil needed.

I also looked at the ebay turbo's, almost certain chinese made which means 60% are garbage and the rest are ok, pot luck really not worth bothering for a reliable vehicle.

Just throwing in my 2 cents..

Thanks for the replies guys, so few days spent removing turbos and refitting, about 45 mins now  Wink

So problems lied in actuator arms operating pressure. Run an airline on old turbo and one on new turbo, big difference in pressure to open up the dump valve. Adjusted the new turbo to the same operating pressure of the old one by undoing the retaining screw on the actuator arm and adjusting until pin alignment was near on covering half the hole on the actuator arm and hey presto, no overboosting and pulling like a steam train!  Very Happy

I thought it sounded like it was over boosting, job done.

Well done.  Smile

Are you concerned about the potential need for water cooling on the replacement turbo?

I would assume the tappings are on the 2.8 block so putting the water cooling pipes on shouldn't be too difficult.

The original turbo was oil fed only. The new turbo is oil fed only.

Apologies I obviously omitted the part about exchanging the new oil and water-cooled model for straight oil with the seller for the same price. It's been a long few days  Laughing
