In the hunt for the souce of a recent rattle detected in the steering I lifted the front of my Mk4 and waggled the wheels.  As a result I think that I can feel play in the OS steering link within the boot, i.e. not at the track-rod end.  Is this plausible and what is the remedy, please?

Remove the boot and unscrew the end, fit a new end and screw it in, get the steering tracked.

Thank you

Would that be the solution even though there is no movement in the track rod end i.e. at the hub end but I can feel movement under the boot?   Am wondering about the tie rod 4422A036 which, I discovered after I posted the question, has a joint.

You need to remove the boot and see where the play is, it could be the tie rod joint or the rack itself.

Thanks.

My original thought was that it is the rack but would I not feel the movement on both sides if that was the case?

I know that boot-off is the next step.

No, the rack runs in a bush on the passenger side and is supported by a spring loaded guide MR510265 against the pinion on the driver side.
