When I bought my Pajero from a dealer it was already registered and MOT'd but the speedo was still in km. Is this leagal or should it have been changed to mph?
Same dealer gave me a 6 month warranty but didnt service it before delivery. Just as well I had it done as cam belt was on last legs!! |
I've had a 2.8TD Paj that was over 10 years when I imported here and all that was required for the MOT was you have to change the speedo dial to show MPH instead of just KPH. To be legal all you require is a set of stickers to show both KPH & MPH. However, my MOT station never enforced this and passed it before I had a chance to stick the stickers on!!!!!
My 2nd Paj (my Paj now) was under 10yrs old and had to have SVA inspection. They required the speedo to show MPH and KPH so they changed the dials but the tachometer (if that's the correct spelling) still operates in KPH and this is acceptable. If you have any questions, let me know! |

I'd have thought that not only yours but everyone else's tachometer would have indicate in RPM & not MPH or KPH.
I changed my Speedo dials to the white ones available from the club shop but unfortunately at night, one couldn't see the KPH at all on the new set. Since then the manufacturer sent me a new Speedo dial that allows the KPH to show at night.....rather essential if one is driving on the Continent as I usually am. Still not a brilliant solution however as the speeds are very small & difficult to see really (depending upon one's eye sight of course). I'm no longer as young as I was (who is?) David |

Helen, Just been reading the thread I'm sure David understood that you meant MILEOMETER not TACHOMETER . He just didn't pick up on it . Oh.... & yes, you are correct on that

Hi Malc, thank you for understanding........ I'm living in Cyprus now and I'm Pajless. I had a 'sticky' on the whole import process but can't seem to find it now! Never mind as long as everyone understands what's required.

Happy Christmas.
Might be worth finding a specialist. I did in Spain & the importation went very smoothly. Some "specialists" are not exactly specialists & that can be a problem. Maybe worth looking around. Enjoy the island.

Thanks I found my link I could use the excuse that the sun has fried my brain but don't know what excuse I could have used in the UK, maybe I'll just dye my hair blonde (no offence intended to blondes)
Thanks for asking (you may regret it) but "Sunny Cyprus" is wonderful, we feel so at home here already now our belongings and furniture have arrived. It might be winter and what they call 'the rainy season' but today it's clear skies and 22degs, can't knock that for December can we? When the rain does come it's a complete torrent for 15 or 20 mins with amazing thunderstorms but then it moves over the mountains and the sun comes back out.
We've been SO lucky ........ We have the home we dreamed of with stunning views of the Paphos coastline! We have both found work, me with a property developer and David at a paintball centre (running around with guns shooting stuff - that's not work!!!) and he's dabbling with his artwork as a sideline. His first commission was to do some wall art in our local pub, free food and drink all day, he's in his element!
Been to immigration this morning to get our permanent resident status so now we're officially here. After being lucky enough to meet David 3 years ago, after a very difficult time in my life, I now feel more content than I have for a very long time. We can't wait for family to visit us, we do miss them dreadfully, but I'm sure we'll have an endless stream of visitors when the spring and summer comes. The best of all for me is that after less than three months my health is so much improved. I was worried I wouldn't cope with work as I couldn't work in the UK but now I have a full time job and my health is better and better every day, nuff said?!?!
Still miss the Paj and the mud plugging but not as much as I thought
Just need to sell my Paj in the UK (before James becomes too attached) then I can save up for one out here (they're twice as much money) cest la vie!!

Now you're "in" Cyprus & enjoying everything as you'd hoped, why not enquire about importing your Paj? It could work out quite well regarding costs in view of the high prices there that you've mentioned. Here in Spain much the same applies & I brought in two. The first was disappointing & I hadn't actually imported it but it was easy to sell & not loose. The second (later model) was excellent & after trucking it down here I officially imported it so now it's on Spanish plates & fully legal in every sense so I have no problems with the law at all (may choose to run what are legally speaking, illegal vehicles in the hopes that they'll "get away with it". Some do but the ones that don't look pretty stupid & maybe regret not legalizing their vehicle. If you want to know a trucking service (they ship anywhere) I'll put you in touch as they cover all over Europe for pick up & deliver anywhere in the world-----at least you could get a price & then be able to calculate the total cost of importation. Might be better than selling off to the highest bidder you can find in UK where they're essentially dirt cheap by comparison. All the best. David |

Thanks David but, long story short, I have extensively researched and looked at every possibility regarding importing and registration in Cyprus and as I imported my Paj to the UK myself I don't have a problem with shipping it. The problem is when it arrives.........
Cars imported to Cyprus can be kept on a duty free basis if you have owned them for more than 6 months in the UK and don't intend to sell them in Cyprus. This works out very cheap with just the registration cost and annual tax to pay like we do in the UK.
However, 4x4's are not included in this category and any that are imported must pay import duty and VAT based on the vehicle's cc's on top of the registration and tax. The import duty on a Paj like mine is approximately £10,000 (no I'm not joking, this is a fact!) Then the registration and tax is also based on the cc of the vehicle, so mine being a 3.5 V6 it would be about £450 a year tax even though I'm disabled and don't pay tax in the UK. Taking all this into consideration, you see the problem? Hopefully, now they're part of the EU this will change but (like everything in Cyprus) this may take some time!
My only option is to sell in the UK and buy in Cyprus some time in the future. Like I said "cest la vie" |

Wow That sounds like Spain in the "old days" although even here they're still catching up but happily vehicle importation is not so darned cruel as that or as bad now as it used to be here. Sure sounds like you'd be best off buying something locally in those circumstances (do they have little men with two wheeled carts as acceptable prices?) Save on parking problems & no insurance either You just relax in the back! Best of luck in the sale & happy living in Cyprus (maybe other things are cheaper than wheels so don't worry). David |
