Just wondering how much people think they can afford to pay for fuel before they look for alternative means of getting to work!!
I have recently changed my shifts at work to help cut out fuel and childcare costs. I still work fulltime hours and have a day off!
Otherwise it might get to the point that I can't afford to get to work!!
I travel 23 miles to work and Alan 27 miles (one way) ... so we can't really cycle! (well, Alan would have heart attack first!!)
However, I do hold a full motorcycle licence, but why should I risk my life ... and spend money buying another ....
Anyway have a vote, and discuss, but please NO politics. |

Hayley goes South West and I go North East, 50 miles apart (and I do 6-2 shift). Two cars and the expense which goes with it.
I could cycle , but by the time I got home from work it would be time to cycle back in again! (the other problem is the Mendip Hills in the way) |

I'm a self employed taxi driver and the fuel price is hitting us very hard
My weekly fuel bill has gone up by £50 - £70, we had fare increas when it went up to £1 a ltr but that was soon eaten up
I used to make a good living but now with fuel prices and people not socialising in there locals and having "cans in house" instead its getting to a point where lots of us are considering other options |

Its already too much if i am driving the paj.......The paj sits outside for days on end and gets used in emergecies and to pull the caravan...its been sat there since a week last wednesday and done about 2 miles.....
When driving the clio then i can tolerate the price rises for a while yet......we are getting at least 45 mpg and my job and fuel allowance covers the cost comfortably at the moment.....its done 4000 miles since january....
In the last year our household and fuel bills have risen around £1500 and Alan's pay has dropped £3....which i guess is the same for most low income families |

If it hits £2 I'll definitely have to find the cash for an LPG conversion.
Some interesting calculators on this website here (links to the left, but don't click 'home' as that doesn't work!):

I'm a softy. I love my car. And I'm not into Bio or vegoil or whatever.
I tried cycling to work for a time and absolutely hated it. Anyone comes near me with a bicycle and I'll shove it up their aris.
As for public transport, I live 'out-of-town', not far out but far enough.
We have four buses an hour, unfortunately in reality we have two different company's buses every half-hour (they follow each other)
It would cost more monthly (£76 in bus fares compared to under £45 in diesel - just to work and back) to use the bus than it does to run the Deli. It also mean I have to walk half mile to and from the bus stop and that's not much fun when it's cold and piddling down.
My employer charges me £8 a month to park at work (hospital) but it's just something else I have to pay if I want to use my Deli and it's still cheaper than the bus.
The Deli is still the best and cheapest form of transport for me (yes, I'm selfish and I don't care - I'd make a good politician ).
I won't get political, I'd only swear.
Diesel is stupidly expensive and it's unlikely to get any cheaper but if I want to drive then I'm going to have to pay for it and I WANT to drive. It's warm, it's dry, it's convenient, I don't have to share with the chavs and the brats and at the moment it's still a lot easier and cheaper than public transport.

I would like to see the prices go up a bit until the pips sqeek................then i'll be able to buy me a 3.2 DiD for a pittance (Prices falling as i write), then i'll have to wait for the prices of fuel to fall .
I'm afraid i like them but thats the only way to afford one and i need a six+ seater at the minimum.
Seriously though we have two cars and as i'm usually contractingaway from home then it is a necessity. I have come to the conclusion for the future to have one small frugal car for me as i'm usually on my own, and a Shogun/ Pajero for her as she usually has a few on board but doesn't do much mileage.
We could have two smaller vehicles but would be breaking the law everytime we went as a family. |

Given the £/€ situation it's pretty much the same price in France (northern France especially is about the same price as the UK anyway).
If you do find a cheap petrol station in France / Belgium, you could work out any potential saving or expense quite easily using this http://www.saveyourcash.co.uk/fuel/wasitworthit.aspx
I don't mean top plug that site too much but I only found it yesterday, it's free to use (no registration) and it has impressed me. |

I dont know really, due to the fact Ive actually gone out and purchased a brand new car that does lotsa mpg to be able to afford to get to work and back as the Paj was costing megabucks. Its a 50 mile round trip to work and back for me. Its been cheaper to pay £150 a month on a loan for the smart and pay for its petrol than it is to pay out just for Diesel for the Paj.
I also dont have much of a choice regarding using public transport as I live in the stix and it would take a walk, a bus, a walk, a train, a change of train and a walk to get into work. It takes 2 hours minimum, takes 45 mins to get to work minimum if I drive. I dont feel the need to add 4 hours to my day strangely enough. It costs me £4.50 in fuel to drive to work per day and would cost upwards of £8 to use public transport. Its a no brainer |

TBH if we had a mortgage (we rent) and a few kids the Paj would be Gulp gone
I honestly don't know how people with families manage what with everything going up the way it has
We really don't envy anyone with a family to look after first and foremost |

i must be one of the lucky one's, i have a works van that i can use to come home in and it does'nt cost me a penny (upto now anyway). the paj gets used most nights but not any sort of distances covered, i personaly think that the fuel prices are to much now, never mind paying anymore. but unfortunatley they have got us by the short and curlys. there has been a lot of discussion about rolling demonstrations and blockading the refineries again but it will come to nowt as usual, the goverment know that we need our vehicals whether its for buisiness or pleasure ( not alot of the latter at the moment though ). if every body in the country decided to get together and decided not to fill up for a few days the revenue lost by the goverment would be massive, but as usual we will just take it on the chin because thats wot the british always do |

There's got to be an element of panic buying pushing prices up at the moment too - I even went and stuck £60 in the cars (not each thankfully!) even though I don't 'need it' but just because it has been going up a lhalf-penny a day for two weeks and I'm not sure it's going to stop! |
